Profile
Holt Island is owned and managed by Huntingdonshire District Council and is supported by the Friends of Holt Island Nature Reserve, a registered charity. We are a voluntary group dedicated to the promotion, preservation and enhancement of this award-winning reserve.
The Island is open from 10am – 4pm on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays between April and the end of October, subject to weather conditions and flooding. Visit our website for more information.
We have taken on a significant challenge – to raise £85,000 to completely replace the boardwalk boards on Holt Island.
The current wooden boards are now requiring replacement at an ever-increasing pace due to the regular flooding of the Island. Indeed, it has been under water four times since last Christmas (2023), so replacing the boardwalk with much longer-lasting Fibregrid has become a priority. Fibregrid should last 40 years, but is much more expensive than the wooden boards it replaces. However, it will also help to make the Island more accessible, particularly to those who visit us in wheelchairs, buggies or with walking sticks. Feedback on the new slip-free surface has been unanimously positive so we are keen to complete the board replacement as soon as possible.
Visitors to the Island can see for themselves the difference the new boardwalk surface makes as we progress alongside the river having already replaced a significant number of the old wooden boards.
We are making progress and are now at 45% of our fundraising target!
